Volunteer Positions Available
 


Facilities


Duties: Site set-up and management of same including monitoring site security, clean-up and site break-down after the event. Work with contractors to ensure correct installation of temporary fences and tents.

Dates: two days prior to the event start, everyday during the event and one day following the event.

Qualifications: sense of humour, ability to lift and carry heavy objects, some mechanical ability.

Race Committee
Duties: Several different jobs are available on a Race Committee boat
* Timer
* Sound signalers
* Flag officer
* Recorder
* Line Judge
* Deck Hand
* Race committee training is nice but not essential for all jobs
* Previous experience can be useful
* A willingness to learn & follow instructions of race officer and/or timer

Dates: Every day
Times: 0800 to 1700 (8:00 to 5:00) Or until the days races are completed

Signal Boat Deck Hand/Pin Boat, Mark Set Boat Deck Hand

Duties:
* Set the anchor
* Assist in docking the boat
* Follow the instructions of the boat owner or pilot
* assist with race management / rescue as directed


Qualifications Preferred:
* A strong back
* Ability to follow instructions
* A pair of gloves can be useful


Dates: every day
Times: while boats are on water

Race Equipment

Duties:

* Inventory control (maintain records of equipment signed out and returned)
* Preparing equipment for each race management team in time to get to their respective courses on time
* Provide the appropriate Personnel with the equipment they need to perform their duties


Qualifications Preferred:
* Early arrival, hopefully in good humour that will last all day
* Organisational skills to record issues/returns
* Ability to climb
* Ability to lift and carry equipment (some items may be heavy)
* Willingness to assist in hauling and pushing bulky equipment to boat loading sites


Dates: Every day
Times: 0800 to 1200(8:00 to 1200) 1500 to 1800 (3:00 to 6:00)

Boat Launch

Duties:
* Assist sailors with boats going in and out of the water
* Assist in traffic control on the road, both cars and boats on dollies
* Retrieve dollies around the harbour area in preparation for the end of the day’s races
* Assist sailors getting their boats off the dollies so others may use them


Qualifications Preferred:

* Ability to assist in lifting boats about 100lbs or less
* Ability to push boats on dollies
* Ability to follow instructions from harbourmaster

Dates: every day
Times: Mornings 0800 to 1030 (8:00 to 10:30) Afternoons 1500 to 1800 (3:00 to 6:00)

Seagulls

Duties:
* Record sail numbers of assigned fleet both going out and coming from the bay
* Report to the harbourmaster

Qualifications Preferred:
* Good eyesight
* Ability to record numbers quickly
* Enjoy sitting in the sun for long periods of time
* Have a strange sense of humour and the desire to dress in unusual clothing

Personnel needed: 10
Dates: every day
Times: Mornings (8:00 to 10:30) Afternoons (3:00 to 6:00) Or until all the boats are in and accounted for

On Water Safety Volunteer

The on water safety volunteer is part of a fleet of small power boats/ribs/inflatables that are responsible for the safety of all competitors and any other boats on the race course.

The safety volunteer should have first aid, CPR and radio training. The safety volunteer should also be able to swim.

The safety fleet is usually on the water before the competitors launch and are the last boats off the water. The safety volunteer must be able to commit to staying on the water for the duration of the day's racing because the safety boats in most cases cannot leave the course except in emergency conditions.


Boat Owners

Duties:
* Supply and pilot your own boat
* If you are unable to pilot your boat find a suitable person of your choosing to do so
* Boat owner are encouraged to perform rescue or race committee jobs on the boat

Boats are required for the following areas:
* Race committee boat (1 per course)
* Line boat (maximum 1, need varies by course)
* Finish boat (1 per course)
* Mark boat (1 per course)
* Utility boat (need can vary per course)
* Rescue boat (minimum one per course, need varies by event)
* Media boat (2-3 per event)
* On water jury boat (at least 1 per event)
* VIP tours (1-2 per event)

Dates: Every day
Times: 0800 to 1700 (8:00 to 5:00) Or until racing is over

First Aid

Duties:
* Administer basic first aid treatments
* Hand out Band-Aids

Dates: Every day
Times: all day Morning, afternoon and evening shifts Busiest in afternoon as boats come off water

Communications

Duties:
* Maintain communications with all on water activities
* Maintain running (written) log on races
* Record communications
* Liaison between on water chairman and on shore needs (VIP etc.)

Qualifications Preferred:
Restricted radio operator license (water)
Radio knowledge

Personnel needed: 3
Dates: Every day
Times: Mornings, Afternoons and Evening shifts

Registration

Duties:
* Enter registration information into a computer
* Issue registration forms and kits
* Collect entry fees
* Check pre-registrations and issue kits
* Help sort registration by class at the end of the day
* Assist with crowd control
* Assist setting up the lobby area

Qualifications Preferred:
* Computer training
* Pleasant personality

Personnel needed: 5
Dates: first two days of event
Times: Mornings, Afternoons and evening shifts

Scoring

Duties:
* Enter race result into computer
* Put out results sheets
* Maintain results boards in the lobby
* Liaison with media and awards
* On water computer operation
* Photo copy results sheets as needed
* Help with competitors inquiries
* Get information out to the people who needed it

Qualifications Preferred:
* Computer knowledge
* Knowledge of mechanics of operating a photocopier

Personnel needed: 10
Dates: Every day
Times: Mornings, Afternoons and evening shifts Mostly afternoon and early evening

Media

Duties:
* Interview sailors, winners, volunteers etc.
* Prepare stories about RHYC
* Liaison with results to prepare information sheets
* Liaison with local and other media
* Round up people for interviews
* Cover any Regatta events (opening, awards etc.)
* Work with support boats on the water

Some or all of the following would be an asset
* Typing & Computer training
* Writing skills
* Pleasant personality
* Inquisitive mind

Dates: Every day
Times: Shifts covering all day

Awards Ceremonies

Duties:
* Check quantities and engraving of awards
* Set-up area for awards
* Co-ordinate with results department for winner sheets
* Keep awards in order for presentation

Qualifications Preferred:
* Organizational skills

Dates: last day of the event
Times: afternoon
